Next to Ayamonte you´ll find the small locality of Vila Real de Santo Antonio, it is part of the District of Faro in Portugal in the Algarve region. It borders with Ayamonte in Huelva, Spain. Both municipalities are seperated by the Guadiana River.

Vila Real is a small locality of only 11,000 inhabitants that is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. It became a town in the 18th century and has 3 nucleuses, Monte Gordo, Vila Nova de Cacela and Vila Real de Santo Antonio. It lives off tourism, fishing, agriculture and the Fortress of Cacela is one of it´s most famous monuments. Monte Gordo was the first town of the Algarve to develop itself for the growing tourism rates and now has become one of it´s major sources of income. It has a variety of hotels, apartments, restaurants, a big casino, and excellent beaches. You should also visit it´s patron saint festivities begining on the 13th of May.

Other municipalities close to Vila Real are Castro Martim and Tavira besides Ayamonte that is found on the other side of the Guadiana.
